As of this very moment
As of this very moment,( November 27, 2018 at 2:16pm) the population in China is 1,889,103,583. Of Course, it fluctuates by the second as new life enters the world and as people pass on. China holds the title for the “The Highest Population in the World”, in second place is India with approximately 1,337,840,000 and in third place is the United States with approximately 327,946,000. In China, Men outnumber women by several million, this is the after effect of decades of gender bias in the country of China. The gender imbalance in China is the most serious in the world. In 1980 China formally established “the one-child” policy, in this time period the new regime of Chinese leaders believed that forcing a restriction on population growth would help to increase the country’s economic prosperity. As you could probably guess by the name of the policy, its purpose was to limit each family to one child. There were consequences put in place for those who did not adhere and had a child without a birth permit. In these cases people were to pay fines that could be much more than the average annual income. The country of China has a traditional preference for males, which caused what is called a “gendercide”, the elimination of girls by way of abortion, abandonment, and infanticide. In the mid-1980’s the policy was slightly adjusted to allow two child for those whose first child was a girl. Then finally in 2015, after 35 years, the policy was eliminated. Still, the damage has made its mark in the country’s gender ratio. According to the CIA’s World Factbook, the gender ratio of the total population of China as of 2017 had 1.06 males to females.
The CIA’s World Factbook also provides information about China’s ethnicity demographics. In China 91.6% of people are Han Chinese, 1.3% are Zhuang, other (includes Hui, Manchu, Uighur, Miao, Yi, Tujia, Tibetan, Mongol, Dong, Buyei, Yao, Bai, Korean, Hani, Li, Kazakh, Dai, and other nationalities) 7.1%. A fun fact is that the Chinese government only recognizes 56 ethnic groups.
