Development of EKademya: An Online Learning Platform

The researchers focused on the people who wants to get a higher education with a legitimate credentials, like certificate or badge, and free course, also an affordable paid course. By developing this system, EKademya, an online learning platform system that contains Learning Management System (LMS) or Learning Content Management System (LCMS). LMS is a software or web-based technology used to plan, implement, and assess a specific learning process. LCMS is an integrated multi-user administrative, authoring, and delivery platform that allows administrators to host, schedule, manage registrations, assess, test, and track online training activities. In other words, LMS includes the managing of records, enroll course and tracking of the students, storing of results, and generate reports from the gathered data from the students. In LCMS, it is a separate system but it is linked to the LMS that will manage the learning of the student, author course content, providing a central repository of course contents and an item bank or for the tests.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
This chapter includes the introduction, background, objective, scope and limitation, and significance of the study.
Nowadays, higher education credentials are need in the industry. It requires to have a career enhancement personal development and a managerial role of both large and small organization. The rapid growth of the internet is leading many educational institutions to offer online courses or programs in different kinds of fields. E-learning is increasingly becoming legitimate and popular to the society and corporate world. The definition of E-learning is an education that provides an electronic source for the students that is created by the instructor of a certain course.
It seems that most of the people are getting their credentials on the e-learning due to free courses that have a credit like a badge or a certificate and there is a paid course if the learners want to exceed their learnings on the field. The institutes of an e-learning are providing affordable higher education with easy accessibility and flexibility. Literally, it is convenient to the learners to gain a degree at home or other places that have a computer and internet, by studying using the e-learning. In other words, gaining an education is not limited to the four walls anymore. E-learning has not only helping those who strive better education but also has contributed a great factor in the society and getting the education in the easiest way. Therefore, when it comes to e-learning more research is needed about quality and values.
Thinking the difference in teaching between online learning and a physical classroom is completely different. The first essential is class management. In a physical classroom, the instructor is free to move the learners around, group them in different ways and making a layout for the class activities, so that it will run smoothly. In e-learning, the class can breakout groups and different arrangements. In reality, the most effective way to conduct an online lesson is often for the instructors to manage the group as a whole. The other essential is the use of back channels. The back channels are particularly educational situations, such as lectures, where the learners are expected to sit, to write and to listen for a long time period. E-learning usually has a text function built in which can act as the back channel provided for the learners.
Background of the Study
An online learning platform is an integrated set of interactive online services that provide trainers, learners, and others involved in education with information, tools and resources to support and enhance education delivery and management. The researcher used the LMS or LCMS in this study.
Objectives of the Study
The general objectives of the study are to develop EKademya: An Online Learning Platform. It specifically aims to:
Design the system that has the following features:
Registration of Students and Instructors
Profile of each students and instructors
Create and update courseware / topic
Quizzes / Test
Checking of submitted documents / assignments
Lapsed and overdue
Tracking of Learners
Filtering Posts and Discipline
Consideration of MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses)
Create a prototype of system as designed using the:
XAMPP for the server and database connection provider.
PHP for web programming language
CodeIgniter PHP Framework
MySQL for database management system
Test and improved the developed based on:
Functionality – performance and compatibility of the system to different web browsers.
Reliability – the speed of system performance of the system on the different compatibility of hardware requirements.
Usability – user-friendly and understandability.
Efficiency – modification of data, display accurate information and level performance of the system.
Maintainability – make specified modifications.
Portability – can use in different computers and browsers.
Evaluate the system in terms of functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency, maintainability and portability and;
Document the study.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study aimed to develop an online learning platform which helps the students and instructors to improve and enhance the skills and knowledge. The proposed system was designed as a generic system. It has a usability features that helps the system to look more integrated. It helps the students and the instructors in order to improve their educational system. Also, the system can handle and secure the accounts of the students and instructors which specifically creates: (a) Content Management System of Course Learning Management for updating their accounts profile, videos, assignments, quizzes and new topics; (b) Create, Retrieve, Update and delete (CRUD) of Online Learning System and; (c) Generating reports for the teachers like the feedbacks or evaluation of the students, database of grades in each students, track the progress of every student or learners and fee of the students.
Significance of the study
The proposed system was designed to meet the expectation aimed for excellence and professionalism. The proposed project is a generic system that can be accessible to everyone.
The results of the study will be beneficial to the following group of people:
The system would give the instructors the access to track the performance of each students, to create modules for the topics or lectures, to upload and download files, to have a forum in the students that might have a problem and to view the current updates of the subjects that are being taken in schools.
This would give the students an access as well as choices to learn new essential things like the facts and trivia, to upload and download files like the documents and assignments, evaluate their teachers or professors, take quiz, be updated to the current subjects, reference for studies or thesis related matter.
The University could collaborate the modules that would be used to teach the students, have a more concrete view of a matter, solid references and researches done by the students, sharing of modules. Download and upload files.
The Future Researchers
This research would give information and knowledge that serves as a guideline to improve their project development. This can also provide necessary information needed for their project or system development.
This chapter presents the review of related literature and studies underlying the framework of the study. It includes the conceptual model of the study and operational definition of terms.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
The word learning is used routinely in discussions about teaching in higher education, so it’s important to clarify what we are referring to when we talk about learning. Learning is “a process that leads to change, which occurs as a result of experience and increases the potential for improved performance and future learning” (Ambrose et al, 2010, p.3). The change in the learner may happen at the level of knowledge, attitude or behavior. As a result of learning, learners come to see concepts, ideas, and/or the world differently. Learning is not something done to students, but rather something students themselves do. It is the direct result of how students interpret and respond to their experiences.
Learning, as defined in various dictionaries, means gaining and/or acquiring knowledge, comprehension, and mastery through a personal experience and observation (Hergenhan ; Olson, 2007). Learning also a process that happens in an individual’s life, it brought about by an interaction with one’s environment (Cobb, 2009)
Collaborative Learning involves student working in team to accomplish a common good. It is an educational approach to teaching and learning that involves groups of learners working together to solve a problem, complete a task or create a product. (Ubac, 2009). Also makes learners acquire information from other mediums such as peers and not only from textbooks.
Transformative Learning Theory is an educational-based theory that looks at “deep learning” which looks at more than just content or processes learning.
Transformative Learning is the reflection on the restrictions and certainty of knowledge and the criteria of knowing. It pronounced through providing students a gateway into learning that requires research and not the usual classroom set-up.
Alternative Learning Education is an education scheme that is included in the non-formal education program in the Philippines (Balson, 2011).
Characteristics of Alternative Learning System
The curriculum, modules, and modules offered are significantly shorter than those being offered in formal education scheme. It offers increasing learning control over different issues such as the lesson or module content, sequence of discussion, time and place where discussion will take place, and which method of learning student would like to subscribe in (Hall, 2008).
eLearning is no longer a new thing, although its virtues and capabilities are still widely misunderstood, unappreciated, and unrealized. Instead of the fear of dehumanizing instruction and learning that were actually helpful to push e-learning to be the best it can be, there’s now a drive to develop volumes of cheaply delivered training pretty much regardless of effectiveness. And there are many misconceptions or urban myths in the driver’s seat (Allen, 2016).
Learning Management System (LMS)
Learning Management System is a software package that enables the management and delivery of learning content and resources to students (TEC Service Consulting Inc., 2012). Also, it is a software or web-based application used to plan, administer, track and report learning processes. With a powerful LMS, organizations can effectively manage learning content to student and then track progress and performance across multiple types of learning activities (Inmedium Inc., 2012).
Types of Learning Management System
Open Source – is a free of use.
Installed – sold as a local product that stores information in local servers with an organization.
Service-based Cloud (SaaS) – sold as a cloud service which means that the organization need s to pay monthly or yearly depending on the contract to use the system.
Mahnegar defines Learning Management as an application used for delivering tracking and managing training and education. LMS also is an integrate tools to manage the tracking of students and the content along with appropriate work flow processes (Irlbeck ; Mowat, 2005). There are several key modules such as managing or educational records, curse distributing application and online learning collaboration. (Hall, 2002).
The term “Learning Management System” (LMS) makes an appearance quite frequently in eLearning articles, tip sheets, and beginner’s guides. (Pappas, 2017)

An Opensource Course Management System (CMS), also known as a LMS/VLE (Virtual Learning Environment). There are several features that are include in Moodle such as online calendar, online announcement, forums, online quizzes, file uploads/downloads, and many more. It offers the users the capability to be able to learn new information at the same time allows users to communicate to other people with the use of an internet (Moodle, 2011).
Course Category – organizing course for all Moodle site participants. Instructors and students will find it easier to find their classes if it is organized in descriptive categories.
Sub category – course that offers.
Course – equivalence to the modules for every course. Many topics can be found within a course / sub category.
Resources/ Activities – an item that an instructor can use to support learning, such as file or link, Also, it supports a range of resources types which instructors can add to their courses.
Assignment Module – instructor can specify task with due date and maximum grade while student can upload the assignment in any file format to server.

The TESDA Online Program (TOP) is an open educational resource that aims to make technical education more accessible to Filipino citizens through the use of information and communication technologies. TOP provides an effective and efficient way to deliver technical education and skills development services to a broader audience/wide range of users/all learners at a lesser cost. The program is created for students, out-of-school youths, unemployed adults, local and overseas workers, and professionals who would like to take TESDA courses at their own pace, in their own time, and at the comfort of their desktops or laptop computers.
The features of TOP were free TVET Online Course and Learning materials. The online course is designed to be taken at the learners’ pace, space and their own time. The purpose of eTESDA was to expand the access and opportunities to quality Technical-Vocational Educational and Training (TVET) thru the use of technology.

CONCEPTUAL MODEL OF THE STUDY
On the basis of the foregoing concepts, theories and findings of related literature, studies present and insights taken from them, a conceptual model is developed as shown below:

Figure 1 shows the conceptual model of the Ekademya: An Online Learning System. The researchers would use their skills, knowledge, principles and methods learned in software development as tools to develop the system. They also employed also some of the hardware devices and peripherals to make the concept materialized. The input requirements for the study are: knowledge requirement, software and hardware requirement.
This includes the knowledge of the researchers on how to create the Ekademya: an online learning system. And also, it includes basic ideas a user needs to know in able to understand easily the proposed project.
These are the programs that are going to be used in the system. Sublime text editor was used primarily for writing the source code of the program. MySQL was used for maintaining the database for the modules of the proposed project. PHP/ HTML, Bootstrap and CSS was used for the interface design of the proposed project. CodeIgniter is an open-source PHP framework which handles the content of the system.
Included here are the hardware tools needed by the researcher to develop the system. There are no specific specs for the hardware as long as the laptop or desktop has a browser.
The second box is the process of the system that undergo by the researcher. The following process are design, development and testing and improvements of the system. The third box is the output of the proposed system which is the development of Ekademya: An Online Learning System.
OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS
To better understand the conducted study, the following terms defined:
CodeIgniter – is a free, open-source, easy-to-use, object-oriented PHP web application framework, providing a ready-to-use library to use with your own PHP applications.
Content Management System (CMS) – is a software application or set of related programs that are used to create and manage digital content.
E-Learning – an online education and it is a convenient term to cover a range of uses of technology for teaching and learning.
E-Learning Platform – is an online service that provide the learners, instructors and other users involved in education with information, tools and resources to support and enhance education delivery and management.
Learning Content Management System (LCMS) – is an integrated multi-user administrative, authoring, and delivery platform that allows administrators to host, schedule, manage registrations, assess, test, and track online training activities.
