In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, a mockingbird is thought to be innocent and does nothing but good. It is also said in the book that it is a sin to kill a mocking bird. In this essay I’ll be explaining to you what characters from the book I think symbolize a mockingbird and why.
The first person I want to discuss is Atticus. In my eyes, he symbolizes a mockingbird because of all the good things he does. For instance, he never intends to bring harm to others, even though he may not be treated nicely. Such as how Mrs. Dubose always quite rude and disrespectful towards Atticus, but despite that, Atticus is still polite to her. He also takes Tom’s case, even though he won’t gain much for it at all and was also ridiculed by most of the town for taking on that case. Another situation was when Bob Ewell spits in his face, but Atticus does not hit him or call him any names at all.
The next person I want to talk about is Tom Robinson. I think of Tom as a mockingbird since all he ever does is good. He’s a good husband, worker, citizen and father, and all he had also helped Mayella after work. He also did it without getting paid, since he knew that Mayella needed help but didn’t have really any money to offer Tom, but despite that he still ended up helping her out almost every day.
Finally, I think that Boo Radley also symbolizes a mockingbird as well, he’s very sweet, gentle, and innocent. Boo is misjudged by the community to be violent and wild. They also spread rumors about him, but the rumors are all proved wrong when he starts to leave gifts for Jem and Scout, which shows the reader his true nature. Although he kills Bob Ewell at the end of the book, he didn’t do it out of malice, but to protect Jem and Scout. After that he carries Jem back all the way home and stays with him to make sure that he is alright.
So overall, what a think that all thee characters have in common and what makes them a mocking bird is that they go out of their way to help out people who need it, regardless of it benefiting them at all. For instance, Atticus went named called and even threated for taking on Tom’s case, Tom helped out Mayella after he worked, and didn’t get paid, and finally Boo helped out Jem and Scout when they were being attacked by Bob Ewell, which put himself into danger but he still helped them out despite that. These 3 characters are genuinely good, and that’s why I consider them to symbolize a mockingbird.
