Teachers are leaders – in their own right. Surprisingly, there is little attention on the topic of leadership and ethics until recently, ethicists and leadership researchers started again to consider the implications of moral dimensions in leadership – be it political, economic, religious and educational realm.
Why now? Nussbaum (2009) has triggered the world of education when she said that education is in crisis. She articulated that the legacy of Dewey and Tagore on the crucial importance of liberal education is today deeply threatened (Nussbaum, 2009, p.8). One reason may be the democratic deficits of our educational system in the world and even in the Philippines.
One question forms the framework of this paper: Is there a moral dimension to leadership? This may seem to be simple and straightforward question, but as we shall see there is a debate and controversy surrounding it. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the lens of Dewey’s liberal education and Nussbaum’s perception on the “imminent demise of liberal education” (Nussbaum, 2009). Then it will connect on the context of democratic deficits of our Philippine education and go down to the local context.
According to Nussbaum (2009), the abilities of citizenship today is doing very poorly because the call for world market is more focused on the scientific and technical skill as the important abilities in the 21st century, and that the humanities and the liberal arts are more and more see as of no use, which are often taken away to make sure we remain competitive (Nussbaum, 2009, p. 9). Thus, the ingenuity and critical abilities were left aside. At one point, the highlight of Dewey’s emphasis on “learning by doing” is now under threat in favor of an education of economic success.
If these trends of focusing much on the scientific abilities, then what will we have in the future? Nussbaum (2009) predicted that we will have people who are technically trained but don’t know how to criticize authority and are only there to make profit with dull-witted imagination.
Nussbaum (2009) strongly pointed out that we need to listen to the ideas of Dewey and Tagore, which favors on cultivating the critical thinking capacity, that promotes knowledge and understanding about the cultures that make up our nation, and the ability to sympathize – imaging the situation of another person (p.13).
