1. Apple Watch Series 2 - Editor's Pick For Best Smartwatch 2017!
Apple watch series 2 is the most successful version of smartwatches around. Apple watch series 2 focus on health, fitness and has worked on the downsides of the original - lack of GPS, lack of proper waterproofing, slow operation, and short battery life.
Apple watch 2 is pretty much identical to the original version, but it's fraction thicker than the one which you might not notice until you see both of them next to each other. The design wasn't a problem either in the original version, so it does make sense for changing the design.
Unlike its rivals, its a square watch with rounded glass edges. The square glass edges help to swipe up, down, right and left from the edge to give extra shortcuts. Like the previous version, the digital crown still works as a zooming in and zooming out button, and also a general navigator.
In Apple watch series 2, the button underneath the Digital Crown has been reclaimed from an ineffective shortcut to contacts and on/off switch, and to a better way to scroll through the new apps dock.
This iWatch is available in various colors Silver, Space Grey Gold, and Rose Gold. On top of that, you can opt for one of two sizes 38mm and 42mm
Features and Performance
Though the size of the display and the resolution of Watch 2 is same, but there is an improvement in the brightness of the screen which helps you to see the watch even on the sunniest day. As we said before, Apple watch 2 is completely water resistance, so you can take it on the beach, but we still don't recommend wearing it while scuba driving.
The built-in GPS enables the watch to perform mapping functions. The watch is also now implemented with a dual-core processor, so it's stated to be 50 percent faster than the original - which we needed for sure.
You can keep track of your fitness activities like like heart pulse, and also keeps track of workout activities.
It has 8GB of storage and features a 246 mAh which stays up with you for almost a day during your daily routine (18 hours backup). You can use the watch for voice calls, and the speaker is loud enough to have a quality conversation with someone. There is a voice recognition feature for picking up the sound quickly which helps to talk with Siri easily and to open the applications with voice command.
It might not be a perfect watch, but it does the job accurately, and with improvement in the new version, the Apple has managed to make it stand out from the crowd. So, our top pick for the Best Smartwatch 2017 is, "Apple Watch Series 2."
- Good performance with improvement in overall technology as compared to old version.
- A range of useful apps for keeping track of daily activity which you'll find addicting.
- Waterproof watch, so you don't have to remove it often.
- Apple watches are overpriced, this is definitely a concern.
- iPhone dependent. To access certain features it does require iPhone, so if you don't own an iPhone, then think twice, because you might miss a lot of functions if you're an Android user.
2. Huawei Watch - Best Android Smartwatch
The Huawei Watch is best Android Wear smartwatch on the market. This smartwatch has made a lot of buzz with its stunning looks and excellent build quality. Although the name of the company is a bit hard to pronounce, but it doesn't fail to win the hearts of experts and customers.
Huawei Smartwatch is available in various colors like a black model and a shiny gold one with a more bling finish. Huawei also features a few case color options, each with a choice of a steel bracelet or leather strap.
It's absolutely a stunning looking smart wrist watch and looks like a regular watch. Unlike other smartwatches, it has a physical button at 2 o' clock, so you don't have to twist your wrist to push it.
Though it's a big wrist watch, but it highlights a 42mm diameter case which fits the majority of the wrists. The watch consists of Sapphire crystal front glass, which is recessed a fraction of a millimeter below the bezel. It makes the glass stronger and keeps it scratch-free.
Huawei has been often criticized for being thick (with a thickness of 11.3mm), but regular watches are not slim either, so it doesn't really matter. The back cover of the watch is covered with the heart-rate sensor.
There's also a four-pin charging port. The watch is IP67 certified for water and dust resistance. However, you've to make sure the charging port is dry before putting this watch on the dock.
Overall, the Huawei watch is one of the best-looking watches built like a traditional looking watch. The steel bracelet design weighs about 130 gram which feels alright, but the leather strap version is absolutely lighter.
Features and Performance
The Huawei Watch features a 1.4-inch AMOLED display with 400x400 pixel of resolution and density of 286ppi, so it's not as sharp as the 302ppi smaller 1.2-inch 360x360 pixel display of the Samsung Gear S2 and S3 (Which we've reviewed after the Huawei's smartwatch).
The another downside is that it doesn't have an ambient light sensor, so you always have to adjust the brightness according to your surrounding which could potentially be a turn-off for you if you're going to wear the watch on a daily basis.
Overall, Colors are vibrant, text appears invigorating, and it still holds up pretty well under bright lights. However, Huawei's rivals do have the edge over display functionality and features, if we talk about it in general.
Since it's an Android Smartwatch, therefore, Google Fit is pre-loaded on the watch and does all the tasks it does on other Google-powered smartwatches. But, Huawei has selected to have a crack at the fitness front too with the watch being pre-loaded with the Daily Tracking app (to compete with Apple's watch).
The daily tracking app works similar to the other apps, but it has slightly better graphics which you'll definitely find attractive and something to boast about. Like other apps, once you enter your personal metrics. it will keep track of your steps, calories burn and a number of times you stand up during a day.
There is no GPS option in the smartwatch which is disappointing for its price – thus, you definitely can't treat it as a dedicated running assistant like other smartwatches in the same price range.
Like other watches, Huawei also features optical heart rate tracker feature, but like its competitors, its also not worth it. It's kinda accurate but not dependable feature to check BPM, since it will only count a pulse of the still wrist which is a worthless feature to measure active heart pulse.
The watch is consist of 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor and 512MB of RAM and like other Android Wear smartwatches has 4GB of storage. Huawei has a battery life of 1.5 days, and it really stays for that long, surprisingly.
Overall, the Huawei Watch is the best Android Wear smartwatch on the market with its sleek design and beautiful build quality. The work has definitely to be done because the watch lacks GPS, the heart rate monitor isn't accurate
- Amazingly good looking smartwatch with traditional wrist watch looks.
- Compatible with most devices an iOS 8.2 or Android 4.3 or later operating system.
- Waterproof watch, so you don't have to remove it often.
- The price has been dropped, but still it's pricey for its functionalities.
- No GPS feature and the heart-rate trackers is pretty inaccurate, so it's a turn off if you're considering it as an assistant for running and health.
3. Samsung Gear S3 - Best For Smartphone Users
It's been over a year since the Samsung Gear 2 smartwatch went live, and it was a hit in the market. Now, Samsung is back with Gear S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier, which costs around 300$.
Like in previous models, we have reviewed, Samsung Gear 3 is n't completely waterproof. It withstands a 30-minute dunk in about 5 feet of water, so it's definitely not a swim watch, but still it gives a peace of mind when a person is around bathtubs and sinks.
There are two models of Samsung Gear S3 - S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier. As the name suggests, S3 is a classical looking smartwatch whereas S3 frontier is more of an outdoor wrist smartwatch. But overall there is not much of a difference. You can pick either of these two models, depending on your choice.
Like Samsung Gear S2, S3 Gear (Both watches) have two buttons and a rotating bezel, but they both look different on each model. Unlike other best smartwatches 2017, you can use pretty much any 22mm strap with both gear S3 watches, so you don't necessarily have to stick with a particular color.
There are plenty of leather straps available online in different colors. The watch rocks every color and stands out of the crowd if you're matching it with your outfit.
However, unluckily, Samsung gear S3 watches are thicker in diameter, unlike previous model Gear S2 which was 46mm in diameter. This is the biggest turn-off of Gear S3 since big watches doesn't look nice on females. We would suggest ladies stick with S2 only.
Overall, there is not much of a difference in Samsung Gear S2 and Samsung Gear S3. The design has been improved a bit, and both the versions are sexier and classical, but diameter still haunts me. If your wrist is small or you're a female, then you might have to stick with Gear S2, or you can go with other models.
Features and Performance
OS - Tizen-Based Wearable Platform
Processor - 1GHz Exynos SoC
Memory - 1GB RAM, 4GB ROM
Sensors - GPS Based Speedometer, Altimeter, Accelerometer,Gyro, SpO2, Heart Rate, Barometer, Pedometer
Samsung S3 Gear has super AMOLED full color display, and the resolution has been improved. The large screen helps to look at the icons and other stuff on the screen. Like Gear 2, it has rotating vezel which helps to operate all the functions like increasing or decreasing volume by rotating the vezel clock and anti-clock wise.
The vezel lets you search through the apps with minimum fumbling. You can instantly dial to all the hub functions such as contacts, recent messages, weather, health stats, and so on. In short, it's like a mouse and you can operate the watch with it easily and quickly.
The watch has impressive speakerphone and Mike. I was able to have a clear conversation while jogging and outing without looking alike I'm barking at the watch. The speaker phone's voice is super clear and you can adjust the volume accordingly. On the full volume, it pretty much sounds like a loudspeaker of an phone.
When you're doing nothing, the watch sleeps and simply start showing the time, but as soon as you twist you wrist the watch wakes up and the display of watch becomes bright.
Talking about battery, Samsung claims that battery lasts for 3 days, however, we were able to use the watch for continuos 2 days with calling and using fitness apps. So, overall, the battery is pretty good as compared to Apple watch and Huawei, to be precise.
The Gear S3 is water, dust, extreme temperatures resistant, and comes with durable Gorilla glass so that it doesn't break down quickly. The built-in GPS keeps track of your activity and makes it easy to share your location. Moreover, you can make payments with Samsung Pay at anyplace by tapping or swapping the card.
The watch is compatible with all AndroidTM devices. Thus you don't necessarily need the Samsung device. Other than that, Gear3 features fitness app which you can use to keep track of fitness activities including sleep time.
The Bluetooth performance is also good. We were able to rock speakers after pairing it, and there were no disturbances in between until we crossed the range, the Bluetooth is pretty much reliable.
The Frontier G3 is an LTE version, so you don't have to depend on any phone, but unfortunately classical version of G3 doesn't support LTE. And, another noticeable feature is "wireless charging," you can go wireless for charging your smartwatch.
- Good looking smartwatches with nice functions.
- Compatible with all Android versions.
- The size is definitely bulky for people with small wrists.
4.Motorola Moto 360 Smartwatch - Affordable!
The next one in our list for best smartwatch 2017 is Motorola Moto 360. It is one of the best smartwatches under budget. It costs less than 200$ and performs pretty well. If your budget is less than 200$ or around, then you need to look at this smartwatch.
This was the first addition of smartwatches by Motorola, and so far it has been one of the best smartwatches powered by Android Wear. The watch comes in multiple designs and colors, therefore, there is something for everyone.
Motorola 360 is a round shaped watch, and it truly stands out. However, it's all about taste, few people like round watches and few square watches, so if you don't want to purchase a round watch, then kindly look at the next watch.
Talking about the display, it's 1.56 inches, 320 x 290 pixels in resolution, 205ppi; Backlit LCD, and Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Well, it's definitely not the watch with the best resolution, but it's absolutely fine for a tiny screen; it seems pretty colorful and bright.
Since this watch is supported by android wear operating system thus this watch comfortably get along with the round screen of Motorola smartwatch, but still there are some flaws which we've discussed below. The interface of the smartwatch is excellent for the most part.
However, the text sometimes gets cut off at the corners, especially when scrolling through long lists like contacts, and messages. And, the tilt sides make the circular border look a touch spiky at particular angles, especially against a white background.
Features and Performance
Processor: TI OMAP 3
Operating System: Android Wear
Connectivity: Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy
Memory: 4GB internal storage +512MB RAM
Battery: 320mAh, Wireless charging with charging dock
Since the watch is powered by Android Wear, therefore, rather than just displaying the time, Android Wear allows transmitting what's on your phone to your wrist smartwatch. If you enable it, then you'll see everything from emails, Twitter notifications to Google Now cards popping up on the watch.
Moto 360 has an ambient mode which always keeps on the apps like maps, fitness, or to-do lists running in full screen, helping extend battery life while maintaining your details and keeping everything ready for the very first glance itself.
Additionally, it has voice control feature that makes it straightforward and easy to get things done, even when you're driving. You can set a reminder, make voice calls, send texts, or check the weather, all with just your voice.
Like other apps, it also has heart pulse measuring feature, and to test the pulse you've to hold your wrist in a quiet position for the sensor to read your beats per minute, and it only takes a few seconds.
Talking about battery performance, it's a 320mAh battery however it's actually a 300mAh size, because of the small size of the watch and Motorola itself has claimed it. If you're going to use watch often with ambient screen mode on, then it will last for like 9-10 hours which is considerably a drawback of this watch.
But, if you'll use it for important tasks only, then it will last long for around 12 hours which is good, but still not excellent, right? Overall, its performance is good, but not excellent like above mentioned watch, but still, it does justice for the price.
- An affordable smartwatch from a branded company
- Powered by Android Wear which makes it stand out from its competitors.
- Battery life isn't dependable. You've to avoid using it all the time if you want it to last for around 10 hours.
5. Fitbit Blaze Smart Fitness Watch - Best Smartwatch Under 200$
Fitbit has established itself as the best fitness smartwatches over the past few years, and there is no doubt that, if you're looking for a fitness tracking smartwatch, then Fitbit could be the most suitable brand for you.
Not only they are cheap in prices, but they provide quality, and that's the only reason they had huge success, and Fitbit smartwatches made a lot of Hype in the last couple of years.
So, the new edition from Fitbit is "Fitbit blaze smart fitness watch" which is the top selling smartwatch on Amazon, so far, and will continue to dominate because this is a revolutionary smartwatch, built to track your workouts.
The Fitbit blaze is versatile looking smartwatch although I don't really like the design as compared to other listed smartwatches, but hey, it's not bad at all. In fact, people have no complaints regarding the design, but for whatever reason, I (the editor) don't find it superior.
There is an improvement in the new model, the dorky black plastic bands now have been replaced with leather straps/bands which enhances the overall experience when you're wearing the watch.
The improved design is slightly thinner, and extremely light which makes it super comfortable to wear all day without sweating and itching feel on the wrist.
The display, i.e., panel of watch is 1.25-inch which is considerably good in size. It's absolutely touch screen, so you can wipe through the options from the screen itself. The brightness is pretty sick, and provides good experience to the users.
The two buttons on the right-side are used for selecting options during mid-workout, especially when your fingers get sweaty and the left button is a back key.
Like Motorola 360, it doesn't have always on-screen feature, so the screen will go black when you're not using it (for battery saving purpose). On the Blaze itself, there are options for Today (today's stats), Exercise (bike, elliptical, run, and other), FitStar (set workout plans) and few other settings.
Features and Performance
Fitbit is powerhouse of features. We wouldn't be able to cover all the features, but we will definitely try to highlight important and some cool features which define the quality of Fitbit Blaze watch.
PurePulse constant heart rate and multi-sport modes enhance every exercise experience, whereas next-generation features like Connected GPS and FitStar works on your wrist which helps you to take your fitness to the next level.
All-day activity, sleep tracking, call, text & calendar notifications help you track your day with ease. Moreover, the interchangeable band and frames and customizable clock face on the hi-res color touchscreen let you personalize your style for every occasion.
How effective the tracking system is?
it's still not the most advanced sleep tracking set-up, but it's pretty accurate in tracking sleeping and steps of the day. And, with the Fitbit Charge HR, it automatically recognizes exercise and tracks it automatically, which works pretty well.
The "Bike and Run" functions use Connected GPS to record distance, speed and all that stuff, and we had not faced any problem with it. You can also use this option without connecting to GPS, as it can track the activity through the arm, but it's not the most accurate without GPS.
As we earlier mentioned in our article, Heart-Pulse tracking systems are really not accurate, but you can get the job done using Chest strap with your smartwatch, but Blaze doesn't support ANT+ or Bluetooth straps.
Overall, the Fitbit app is excellent. It's easy to use and precise, it proposes adequate data without feeling awful, and the sync between smartphone and watch is pretty bulletproof, we never faced connection issues.
Fitbit ensures five days of battery life from the Blaze, which is unquestionably true. Even with tracked workouts, the Blaze remained alive for five days after the initial charge. It's pretty impressive as compared to all other smartwatches, thus stands out really well.
- Fitbit Blaze syncs automatically and wirelessly to 200+ leading iOS, Android and Windows devices using Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology.
- Fitbit Blaze is sweat, rain and splash proof, however it is not a swim proof watch.
- Battery life is just amazing. It stays alive for 5 days even on tracking functions
- The HR tracker not the best for tracking stuff.
- There is No GPS without smartphone, so if you don't have smartphone with you, then you've to face problems.
6. Pebble Time Steel Smartwatch - Best Smartwatch 2017 Under Budget
Pebble is an old brand that established it over the period. Not only they maintained the standards and quality, but they also conceived the ideas of long-lasting smartwatches. But, now, Pebble has been acquired by the fitbit.
Pebble wont be making its own hardware, but Fitbit will continue to use pebble's software. So, according to us, it's a win-win situation for both the company and the customers. Fitbit is a brand itself, so you can expect some good looking smartwatches from them in near future.
This watch is our last edition to the "best smartwatches 2017," but we will definitely keep on updating our article with better alternatives.
Tine Steel is the upgrade version of the "Time" version. There are few improvements in the new version, but for this section, we will stick to the design.
The substantial visible difference between the Time and Time Steel is the added metal. The watch case is constructed of marine-grade stainless steel which feels much nicer against the skin.
The Pebble Time Steel is 1.25 inches screen, and has 144 x 168 resolution. Its size is unquestionably smaller than other Android watches, and Apple watch, but for its price, that's not bad. The 2.5D glass layered over the top, provides it a more curvaceous look when you look at it from an angle.
With a new color e-paper screen and comfortable ergonomic design, the Pebble time steel smartwatch is a good companion for outdoor activities.
For navigation, there are three buttons on the right of the display and a single button on the left. Opposite the Time, the old version, the buttons are significantly improved and less stiff to press due to the extra 1mm thickness in steel.
The smartwatch is available in various colors like Red, black, and silver. Personally, I prefer silver color, because it looks more elegant, and we had a good time with it when we received the review unit.
Features and Performance
Well, there is a mere improvement in the area of software by Pebble, but it's definitely not a shocking improvement. You can pair the watch with iOS and Android as well (A premium feature that most of the smartwatches don't have). Thus, if you love using both OS, then you should definitely purchase this watch.
Pebble timeline adds the calendar to your wrist in a simple yet efficient manner. Events, notifications, missed calls - all the moments that matter, organized together. Review what's happened and see what's ahead, all at a single glance.
Battery Life- Best Smartwatch 2017 [Battery Life up to 10 Hours]
The noticeable feature between Time and Time Steel is "Battery Life." Whether you’re managing your packed weekly schedule, or getting out of town for a long weekend, a full charge powers you for over a week.
Though the Pebble advertises 10 hours of battery life, but that's not the case. With minimal use and tweaks in the watch's settings, it stays live for a 7 or 8 days, but still, it's a plenty of time.
Pebble Health app allows you to automatically track steps and sleep seamlessly, with daily stats that appear on you timeline, and weekly graphs to show trends.
The Pebble Time Steel is water resistant to 30M. You can go for swimming and shower with this watch, and it will continue to work without any problem. The old version didn't have a microphone, but Time Steel do have it. You can take voice input to answer texts, add items to the timeline, or take quick voice notes.
The Time Steel has quick-release bands so that you can customize the looks of your Time Steel quickly with bands of other colors.
- Improved design makes it more user-friendly, and ergonomics of Time Steel is pretty much comfortable.
- Battery life is just amazing. It stays alive for 7 days with normal use.
- Kinda expensive for what it offers (No GPS, and No voice call features).
Finals Words - Wrapping it Up
Smartwatches are hot trend, but most important, it provides the value to the owner. Our top pick would always be Apple Watch Series 2, but if you're not a big fan of Apple, then Samsung Gear S3 is a pretty good alternative. Everyone has got different budget, so we've reviewed various smartwatches.
If you've any question, then drop your comment, we will clear your doubts as soon as possible. And, don't forget to share this article with your friends.
