The family situation that can cause the most tension is when a family member is dealing with a substance abuse problem. Since the family system deals with a family’s emotional state you will see one household be broken up. I will be looking at substance abuse as if the mother who is recently divorced, two children, addicted to oxycodone and other drugs, and her parents are living in her home. The mother family system would be her two children, her parents, and the ex-husband. The concepts of family system that would be best to handle this scenario would be emotional distance and impairment of one or more children. Since the children has a parent that is dealing with a substance abuse they tend to take on the responsibility and feel like it their fault that their parent is that way. According to Martina Palombi “The mother–child relationship is an influential factor in the development of the child’s self but it is always thought of as one amongst multiple influential relationships and factors within the context of the child’s nuclear, extended, and multigenerational family system” (2016 and 329). The mother- child is the relationship is the most affected system because the bond between mother child is strong and the mom will not be able to tend to her children like she use to because the addiction is causing her fail at her parental obligations. The negative results that can happen from the mom substance abuse problem it can cause the children to grow closer to the grandparents and the dad. The mom will start to feel like and outsider in her home even though she knows it was her actions that has caused this separation between her and her children.
